Vacuum trucks or trailers are used by towns and municipalities to remove sludge from sewers, manholes, dewatering of flooded land and parking lots as well as in rural areas to clean individual septic tank systems. More specialized services are cleanup of soil. Other common uses are in the cleaning of sanitary sewer lift stations as well as cleaning grease interceptors that are required by law to catch food and waste grease before entering the sanitary mains in most restaurants.
Industrial use in the in the petroleum industry include cleaning of storage tanks and spills. Vacuum trucks are also commonly used when drilling oil and natural gas wells. - What is a Septic Tank?
A septic tank is the primary part of a septic system designed for wastewater to drain into the tank. The tank has 2 or more chambers, one chamber to separate the hard non dissolved solids, and the other to allow for leaching or pumping of the fluids into a septic field or mound. Areas that are not served by the local sewage treatment plants require a septic tank. A septic tank is connected to all the drain lines within a building that has sinks, toilets and shower facilities. A septic tank can serve a small home, or even a large community, the size of the tank will dictate the volume of sewage it is able to handle. A holding tank is different from a septic tank in the fact that a septic holding tank will not allow pumping or leaching into a field. All sizes of septic holding tank must be pumped out every time it reaches its holding capacity. The major two types of bacteria’s to remember are Anaerobic and Aerobic. Anaerobic bacteria’s are found inside the septic tank. The warmer the temperature inside of the septic tank, the happier the bacteria becomes. Aerobic bacteria’s are found in the septic fields. Their job is to continue to break down the sewage.
- Proper Septic System CareWaste water draining into a septic tank and field should never consist of the following;
- Non- biodegradable waste such as diapers, cloths, hygiene products, cigarettes, cotton make-up swabs or Qtips.
- Drain cleaning chemicals or petroleum products.
- Herbicides, pesticides, bleach, swimming pool water, corrosive fluids.
- Paints, solvents or any other in-organic materials.
- Attention must be given to prevent excessive rain water or runoff from getting into the septic tank.

Any of the above items will kill the anaerobic bacteria’s required to breakdown the human waste solids causing septic tank failure. Smells, odors and sour fields are a direct result of dumping the wrong things into a septic tank system. Other areas of concern are the use of garbage disposal units also known as garburators that can overload the system and cause failure.
- Septic Tank Safety Concerns
Because of the anaerobic action taking place in the tank, hydrogen sulfide gases are produced. Never go into a septic tank that is or has been in use. Death has occurred many times from people unknowingly or carelessly working in and around septic tanks. Alarms can be installed to warn of a clogged discharge pipe, or a failure of the pumps used to remove the effluent.

What is a Septic Holding Tank
Holding tanks are large sealed leak proof tanks designed to safely hold sewage for removal via a Vacuum-Truck. The vac truck will then transport the sewage to a sewage disposal site. Holding tanks must meet CSA standards for use. Also known as sewage collection tanks, sewage collection tanks are sold in different sizes to collect sewage from small to very large dwellings.
In Alberta, are there governing guidelines that must be followed for septic holding tanks? Yes, Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice (SOP) Currently, the CSA B66-10 is the most up-to-date standards tank manufactures in Alberta can follow. Typically in Alberta, you are only required to contain one days worth of sewage. It is recommended to install a larger tank to reduce the trips a sewage hauling trucks will need to make to suck out and haul away the sewage. Keep in mind that Commercial Vac Trucks used to drain and remove the tank contents are around 2000 to 3000 imp gallons of capacity.
- How are Septic Holding Tanks Different than Septic Tanks?
A septic tank differs from a septic holding tank in design and uses. A septic tank has baffles inside that separate the solids from the fluids, with the fluids (effluents) draining out of the tank either by gravity or pumping into a septic field or leaching pond. A septic Holding tank is simply a tank that stores the waste for removal via Vac Truck. A septic field system is far more efficient and considered the septic maintenance free choice whereas a holding tank will require pumping out every so often. Having a running toilet or dripping taps in the dwelling will quickly fill a septic holding tank to capacity requiring more frequent septic tank pump-outs. Local codes dictate if you are allowed to have either a septic field system or Septic holding tanks system. - Where would a Septic Holding Tank be required?
Commercial and residential holding tanks are practical when having a leach or septic field system or a sewage lift station pumping to a municipal treatment facility is not possible. Often you can find large sewage holding tanks used in airports, oil field camps, temporary housing infrastructures, even villages and towns may have septic holding tanks collecting waste from occupants - How are Septic Holding Tanks sized?
Sewage holding tanks are sized by the number of people, bedrooms or expected daily sewage volume. A one day holding limit is the current size standard in Alberta. - Septic Holding Tank Tips;
- Use water saving fixtures in the dwelling
- Install in an area that will not allow ground water or run-off water into the tank
- Install the tank in an area that is easily accessible for pump outs by large sewage haulers (Vac Trucks)
- Follow local codes on install
- Install tanks that are manufactured to the latest CSA standards.
- Have the tank installed with a stand pipe “Quick Connect” for faster and cleaner pump-out service
- Never allow hazardous waste to drain into the tank. Doing so will have your waste reclassified as “Hazardous Waste” which is very expensive to dispose of.
Never go into the tank for any reason. There are gases such as H2S that can and surely will cause serious injury or death in minutes.
A septic tank wastewater system can contaminate ground water, surface water and your yard with nutrients, bacteria and viruses if it isn’t maintained properly and pumped often enough. By following these tips, your system will function properly, safely and without septic odours.
Septic Tank Maintenance Tips
- Inspect your septic system annually. Septic Source can do this for you.
- Pump out your septic tank regularly. Every one to two years depending on the number of people living in the home. This is extremely important.
- Do not divert roof drains or basement sump pumps into your septic system.
- Avoid the use of your kitchen garburator.
- Don’t use your toilet as a garbage can.
